Inlays work in the same way as fillings but are used to fill gaps in teeth with a larger surface area. These are usually the teeth at the back of the mouth that are used for chewing.
An onlay is used when the gap we’re filling is in the cusp of the tooth. The cusp is the visible part of the tooth, and an onlay acts as a kind of cap to help repair and rebuild the shape of the tooth.
Like fillings, inlays and onlays can be made of metal, composite resin, and porcelain. Because onlays are used to repair the visible part of the tooth, we often recommend using porcelain as it mimics the shade and surface of a tooth much more naturally.
